In an ambitious move to enhance climate resilience in the Kurdistan region, On 2nd of April, Hasar Partners, in collaboration with the University of Kurdistan Hawler’s Center for Environmental Studies, has initiated a innovative internship focused on data analysis within its sustainability lab. This initiative is an educational opportunity and a merging of minds aiming to tackle one of the most urgent issues of our time: climate change.
A Fusion of Learning and Action
At the core of this internship is a team of students at various stages of their academic journey, united by a shared passion for sustainability and a readiness to tackle complex environmental challenges. The program is structured around task-based learning, with two main phases designed to enrich the interns’ understanding and practical skills in analyzing sustainability data (see our Sustainability Lab).
The initial phase was highlighted during a significant event at the University of Kurdistan Hawler, titled “Utilizing Artificial Intelligence for Climate Actions.” This event marked a significant collaboration between Hasar Partners and the Center for Environmental Studies, emphasizing the crucial role of data in creating effective climate strategies.
Spotlight on Sustainability
During the event, the Data Analysis team from Hasar Partners presented their findings on a variety of environmental issues. Topics covered included air pollution, deforestation, water quality, and canopy analysis, each study supported by thorough data analysis and a commitment to contribute to significant climate action.
The message from Hasar Partners’ president and co-founder was clear and strong: “We want to use data to understand the frequency and magnitude of climate change in the Kurdistan Region. We will not stop here; we continue to build our climate actions based on data-driven decisions.” Gashbin Idris said. This statement emphasizes the organization’s commitment to sustainability and also the importance of data in forming effective environmental policies and actions.
Tools for Change
A key aspect of this initiative is the development of specialized tools through Google Earth Engine by Hasar Partners. The aim is to bridge the gap between the scientific understanding of climate change and the scarcity of relevant data. These tools are designed to allow users to extract spatial and temporal sustainability data, thereby enhancing the accuracy and effectiveness of climate resilience efforts.
